Description
Presented is a wonderful 18th century French silver covered serving dish or ecuelle made by the Paris silversmith, Jacques Favre. This piece is properly called an ecuelle. Favre was active as a silversmith from 1774 to 1808. The bowl is nicely wrought with shell and scroll handles on either side. The lid is elegantly engraved with the old original monogram of AP surmounted with a crown. The dish is engraved with an open cartouche with a crown above it. This crest is on both the lid and the side of the bottom half. The engraving in the center of this crest, on the bottom piece, is largely worn as can be seen in the photos. The covered dish is very well made and has good weight. A wonderful piece of French silver from before the French Revolution, during the reign of King Louis XVI.The underside of the dish and the lid are both hallmarked with a maker’s mark of JF for Jacques Favre, a letter A beneath a crown which is the Paris charge mark used from 1781 to 1789, and an R beneath a crown which was the Paris year mark for 1780. Although the date of the year mark does not match the dates of the charge mark perfectly, it is very likely that the R year mark was used for part of 1780 and part of 1781. I see no reason why the time frames for these two marks would not have overlapped slightly. A 1780-1781 date also matches very well with the time period of the maker’s mark for Jacques Favre. The dish and the lid are also hallmarked near the rim with a Paris medium discharge mark as shown.
The dish is in great condition overall. It does have surface wear commensurate with its age as well as a number of small dents and dings. There is also one small split on the edge of the lid which we have pointed out in the last photograph. This small split could easily be solder repaired by any competent silversmith. There are no breaks and no repairs.
The dish measures 7 1/8 inches in diameter at the rim. The width over the handles is 9 1/4 inches. The height to the top of the lid is 4 1/2 inches tall.
The weight is 662.1 grams or 23.1 ounces.
