Description
Offered for sale is a wonderful pair of 19
th
Century Italian Silver Candlesticks, from Parma by Gaetano Magrini (1775 Piacenza - 1847.) They feature a mix of neoclassical and empire decoration with acanthus leaf engraving around the stem and acanthus leaf repousse around the candleholder. Below, there is neoclassical beading around the base. The bases and candleholders are faceted which reflects the candlelight beautifully. French occupation hallmarks, rooster with the number 2 (gallo in reposo 2) and warrior head with A in helmet (testa di guerriero con lettera A) in use from 1809 through 1814 and GM in a lozenge for Gaetano Magrini. See,
Argenti & Argentieri a Parma
, Fig. 118. Only one candle is hallmarked, though they are clearly a pair of exact same design and construction and age. (Silversmiths were charged by the weight for hallmarking, perhaps this was a protest by an Italian silversmith against the French occupiers.)
They stand 10 inches (25 cm.) tall. The candlesticks are in very good condition with scratches and some dents to the candleholders as shown in the photographs. (CD239)
