Description

Offered here is a very impressive, Art Nouveau era, Claret jug that dates to about 1890. The jug is composed of a beautifully cut and polished, Rhombus shaped, Crystal body that is deeply engraved with a Narcissus flower pattern all around and mounted with superb silver work forming the handle, spout and hinged cover that incorporates a floral pattern in high relief with a flower bud atop the cover.
The Silver is of 800 purity and bears the Hallmarks of Gebruder Kuhn - Schwabisch Gmund, which was founded in 1864 by Viennese Goldsmith Johann Stanislaus Nepomuk Kuhn. In 1886 the firm was taken over by his two sons Emil and Gustav. The Hallmarks are: Crescent moon and Crown-representing the unified nation of Germany; 800-the minimum national standard for silver in Germany; Unicorn-the heraldic animal of the region of Schwabisch-Gmund.
The jug stands just under 11-1/2 inches tall, the Silver spout and handle is 6-1/4 inches end to end, and the base is about 4 inches wide.
CONDITION: The base of the jug had been polished at some point in time after the date of manufacture.
There remains some of the Gold inlay of the floral pattern and it is fairly uniform, therefore, making it difficult to determine how dense the original application was.
The silver mount is beautifully preserved with no damage or alterations. Overall, in very good condition.
